Background of the Study
Fraud is a major challenge for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria, undermining their financial stability and long-term viability. In Abuja, the nation's capital, SMEs play a critical role in the economy, yet many face significant challenges related to financial mismanagement and fraudulent activities (Okoro & Asogwa, 2024). Fraud can take various forms, including misappropriation of funds, false reporting, and employee theft, all of which can adversely affect an SME's operations and reputation. As businesses grow and become more complex, effective fraud prevention mechanisms are essential to safeguard assets, maintain financial integrity, and sustain investor confidence.

In Nigeria, many SMEs lack robust systems for fraud prevention due to limited resources, inadequate training, and a general lack of awareness of effective anti-fraud measures (Oluwadare & Ogunleye, 2023). This study aims to evaluate the existing fraud prevention mechanisms in SMEs in Abuja, examining the extent to which these mechanisms contribute to reducing fraud and promoting financial stability.

Statement of the Problem
Fraud remains a persistent problem among SMEs in Abuja, with many businesses struggling to implement effective fraud prevention strategies. The lack of awareness and understanding of fraud risks leads to poor internal controls, making SMEs vulnerable to financial losses. This study will assess the current fraud prevention mechanisms in Abuja's SMEs and explore how these businesses can strengthen their anti-fraud systems to enhance financial security.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of fraud prevention mechanisms in SMEs in Abuja.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by SMEs in implementing fraud prevention strategies.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving fraud prevention in SMEs in Abuja.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are the fraud prevention mechanisms in SMEs in Abuja?

  2. What challenges do SMEs in Abuja face in implementing fraud prevention measures?

  3. What strategies can be employed to enhance fraud prevention in SMEs in Abuja?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H₀: Fraud prevention mechanisms do not significantly reduce the occurrence of fraud in SMEs in Abuja.

  2. H₀: There are no significant challenges in implementing fraud prevention strategies in SMEs in Abuja.

  3. H₀: Strategies to improve fraud prevention mechanisms do not significantly enhance fraud reduction in SMEs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on SMEs in Abuja, excluding businesses outside the capital territory. Limitations include the potential bias in self-reported data from SMEs and the difficulty in accurately measuring fraud prevention effectiveness.

Definitions of Terms
